Windows 7 Trial for Businesses Gets Extension

Those still on the fence about trying Windows 7 now have more time to give the new operating system a shot, as Microsoft has just announced that they plan to extend their 90-day Windows Enterprise Trial program to December 31, 2010.

The program was initially launched in early September 2009, prior to the actual launch of Windows 7 to the public. Considering the hesitance that comes with installing a new operating system, this trial is valuable, as it allows IT professionals to test their applications and programs via the Windows 7 Enterprise platform to see how compatible it is to their needs prior to purchasing it. The trial also gives Microsoft a platform to tout their new operating system, as the company hopes that users will see the various improvements within Windows 7 and be tempted to purchase it for the upgrades it offers.

Not everyone can access the Enterprise Trial program, however.  The program is limited to companies that have at least 250 machines.  It is available in both 32-bit and 64-bit editions, and it comes in several languages such as English, Japanese, Spanish, German, and French, allowing a global market to test it.

Windows 7 Enterprise is sold directly through Microsoft's Software Assurance program.  Software Assurance gives users the ability to download the operating system to multiple machines, using a license that is valid for multiple installations and a volume license key for activation.

Windows 7 Enterprise offers several improvements over Windows 7 Professional.  It has a variety of features that can aid businesses in maximizing efficiency and improving overall management, which, in the end, helps to cut costs.

DirectAccess allows workers to stay connected to their corporate network even when on the road and away from the office.  As long as they have a connection to the Internet, they can access whatever content they need in a secure manner.

BranchCache increases workers' efficiency in branch offices by allowing them to access and download content in a much faster time period than before.  It also reduces bandwidth costs to the company by caching data locally.

Federated Search allows workers to find the data they need quickly and intuitively, saving both time and headaches. BitLocker helps protect crucial and sensitive company with increased security measures that come into play should a computer or removable drive be lost or stolen. AppLocker gives IT professionals the ability to control what programs are allowed to run on user desktops for increased security within an organization.

Once the 90-day trial is over, users have the option of either purchasing the full download or deleting the trial version from their machines. Whether or not Microsoft gets the sales numbers they intended remains to be seen, as many professionals might prefer to stick with the older operating systems they currently use. However, it is hard to ignore the many features that Windows 7 Enterprise has to offer, especially if one places the efficiency and management of their company as a high priority.
